As you are planning your wedding you will get lots of advice from many different people – friends, family, work colleagues, people on the train, even your DJ(!) and recently married brides and grooms.
Some of this wedding planning advice will be welcome and some of it should can be ignored. Here are a few examples of wedding advice that might be given that you can ignore.
- “There’s no need to plan for rain – I am sure it will be a lovely day”. Everyone hopes that their wedding day will be sunny and dry, however we live in a ‘green and pleasant land’ for a reason – it does rain. So be prepared – a few umbrellas to hand for guests to use, if you are using a marquee make sure there is the minimum of a carpeted walkway to the nearest hard paving – high heeled shoes and wet muddy grass do not mix, talk with your photographer about a Plan B.
- “It’s the brides special day so it should be done her way”. Do not forget that your wedding is not just about the bride – grooms should have their say and input as well.
- “You should get your teeth whitened, change your hair colour, lose a bit of weight for your wedding, get a tan…”. If you want to you can but don’t forget your other half loves you just the way you are – if it will make you feel better go for it – but do not do anything that makes you feel comfortable.
- ” You have to have a bouquet toss”. You don’t. It is up to you, and similarly you do not have to have any of the following ‘traditions’
a receiving line
toss your garter
a white wedding dress
a veil
something old, something new, something borrowed or something blue
write your own vows
have your Dad (or anyone else) to give you away
and, one I am always asked about – a First Dance – if it fills you with dread do not do it.
Part of the fun in arranging your wedding is doing it your own way, don’t get caught up by following traditions or taking all the advice given to you as being gospel, sometimes it is better to nod and smile and walk away!
